Historical Memory and Culture on the Island of Lesvos. Our team in Mytilene assembled different pictures of cultural sites in Lesvos, including many old churches, museums, monuments etc.

Greece has a lot old churches and monasteries. In Lesvos there are a lot of monuments worth visiting. For example the Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos (Damandi) was built in the 16th century.

 

People visiting the monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos (Damandri) can see the frescoes displayed in the interior dated back in the 16th century.

 

This is a marvelous structure built some time between the 7th and 8th century. The visitor can see the architecture as well as the art (icons) displayed in the interior.

This is the exterior of the Teriade Museum which contains various collections of modern art. Teriade was given paintings, books and illustrations by famous 20th century artists such as Matisse, Picasso, Chagall and others.

This is the Municipality headquarters of Mytilene, a neoclassic building preserved for a long time which currently houses municipal offices and personnel.

This is the exterior of the municipal theatre of Mytilene which has been recently renovated and hosts theatrical groups, speeches and music performances.

 

This is the interior of the theatre. It's a large, impressive auditorium with a 700-seat capacity.
